Is it for you?
Katapola is the destination of the discerning
traveller. If you want to get away from it all, immerse yourself in the
Aegean sun and experience the peaceful nirvana of Amorgos daily life,
the port of Katapola with its three little hamlets is the place for you.
Walks
If you are an avid walker, the hills of Moundoulia leading up to the
Minoa ruins or the trek up the hill to Khora, will fulfill your wildest
expectations. The views grow more spectacular the higher you go and the
whole Katapola harbour lays majestically at your feet.
Exploring..
You can take the bus to Khora
and find yourself in one of the Cyclades most picturesque and authentic
villages. The sight of the whitewashed houses with the Cycladic-blue paintwork
or the hundreds of little churches will stay with you forever.
Accommodation
Our personal choice when we visit Katapola is staying at Diosmarini
in Ksilokeratidi and taking a leasurely walk around the bay for some high-quality,
authentic food at the Kamari Restaurant in Katapola.
Eating out
The Kamari restaurant is an excellent choice if you
want to sample traditional home-cooked food and delicious pattisseries.
It is run by Yiorgos Nomikos and his wife, Vangelio, and is situated right
by the Katapola port. Yiorgos spent many years as a Chef and Pastry Chef
in some of the best restaurants in Athens before returning to his native
island. If you have a sweet tooth, the Kamari is the place to indulge
yourselves!
Yiorgos' wife comes from the Vekris family of Ksilokeratidi and is the
daugher of Captain Pantelis (now in his eighties, pictured in the gallery
above tending to his boat). Her brother Antonis
is one of Amorgos' most famous sons and an entrepreneur whose reputation
spans the whole of Greece. One of the traditional Amorgos products he
has revived is the famous 'rakomelo' beverage, Amorgion. Make sure you
ask for it at the Kamari! You will want to take a few bottles of it home!
